چکیده
In this paper, we examine and characterize eeects of communication interactions of parallel and sequential jobs on a nondedi-cated network of workstations. We quantitatively model the interaction process and measure communication delays of parallel jobs caused by the interaction. Measurement results on an ATM network of workstations support our analytical models.

Characterizing Communication Interactions of Parallel and Sequential Jobs on ATM Networks of Workstations
In this paper, we examine and characterize eeects of communication interactions of parallel and sequential jobs on a nondedicated ATM network of workstations. We quantitatively model the interaction process and measure communication delays of parallel jobs caused by the interaction. In addition, a scheme is proposed to distinguish and prioritize the two types of communications messages to reduc...
متن کاملA Double Queue Scheme to Improve Communication Performance of Parallel Jobs in Nondedicated Networks of Workstations
We examine eeects of communication interactions of parallel and sequential jobs on a non-dedicated ATM network of workstations. Our performance evaluation indicates that the network interface below the TCP/IP protocol forms a communication bottleneck during interactions, because a standard network interface with a single input or output queue is not able to distinguish communication requests fr...
متن کاملEecient Local Scheduling of Parallel Tasks and Communications on Heterogeneous Networks of Workstations
The network of workstations (NOW) we consider for local scheduling of parallel tasks and communications is heterogeneous and nondedicated, where computing power varies among the workstations, and multiple jobs may interact with each other in execution. Local scheduling is a standard method on networks of workstations, where each node in the system makes independent scheduling decisions. Coordin...
متن کاملExploiting Fine-Grained Idle Periods in Networks of Workstations
ÐStudies have shown that for a significant fraction of the time, workstations are idle. In this paper, we present a new scheduling policy called Linger-Longer that exploits the fine-grained availability of workstations to run sequential and parallel jobs. We present a two-level workload characterization study and use it to simulate a cluster of workstations running our new policy. We compare tw...
متن کاملCoordinating Parallel Processes on Networks of Workstations
The network of workstations (NOW) we consider for scheduling is heterogeneous and nondedicated, where computing power varies among the workstations and local and parallel jobs may interact with each other in execution. An effective NOW scheduling scheme needs sufficient information about system heterogeneity and job interactions. We use the measured power weight of each workstation to quantify ...
